How to install IPtraf

1. Download the package and untar it as root.(To check version:


[root@server~]#tar zxvf iptraf-3.0.0.bin.i386.tar.gz

2. Go to the untared directory and run setup.

[root@server~]#cd iptraf-3.0.0.bin.i386


(You will may ask for read the Release Notes, say N)

3. Open IPTRAF window by run the command ‘iptraf’ as root.


4. Press any key to continue.

5. You will get an options menu. On that menu, select “Configure”.

6. Now select “Logging” and Enter. You will now see in the section ‘Current Setting’ for Logging changes to “On”.

7. From the same menu, select “Force Promiscuous Mode” and Enter. In the ‘Current Setting’ Promiscuous Mode will now change to “On”.

8. Now, press the “x” key to exit this menu.

9. You will be go on the main menu, select “IP traffic monitor” and Enter.

10. Then select “eth0″ and Enter.

11. A dialog box for the log file will be pop up. Here you can change path for log file of IPtraf. Press “Enter” to accept the default setting.

12. You will see all network connections on the next window…All the ports are coming from and the ports are connecting to your server. The upper section shows TCP connections while the bottom shows UDP connections.

13. From the main menu, Select ‘Detailed interface statistics’, select eth0. It shows the total amount of traffic that is flowing from each type of connection, the rate of connections. This information will give you a basic scenario of what type of connection is causing your bandwidth.

14. From the main menu, Choose ‘Statistical breakdown by TCP/UDP port’. This list will show you that how much traffic is coming from each port and yes, This is a good way to check ports connecting to other computers that you  do not want to be happening.
